The Ruby on Rails open source web application framework has announced its first release candidate of Ruby on Rails 3. Used by web developers for rapid application development, Danish-born Ruby on Rails creator David Heinemeier Hansson has highlighted a total of 842 new 'commits' by 125 code contributors since the previous iteration of the beta.
Recent code augmentations have centered on speed of development and performance. Although Heinemeier Hansson is typically modest in his RubyonRails.org blog when he says, "Most of the fixes have been of minor significance, but we did manage to dramatically speed up Rails 3 development and startup speed for larger applications."
Ruby on Rails 3 is generally agreed to represent a significant revision to the application framework. This release will see the Ruby on Rails and the lighter-weight Ruby-based Merb framework finally come together in close proximity, after the two entities find announced that they would work with each other back in December 2008.
