Stealing Passwords was the only way to get any computer time at the university. It seems that the particular setup of the TTYs at UCI required the TTYs to set some sort of non-echo mode that prevented the head from striking the paper, but otherwise ran the same circuits. The consequence thereof was that the paper tape punch was independent. So if a high school kid came in and turned the punch on, then the next time somebody logged in, it would punch out their password.
