ActiveState has launched the Open Komodo Project with the goal of promoting non-proprietary, open-source development tools for the "Open Web." ActiveState has started a new web site for the project openkomodo.com, and has released the code base for open-source versions of its flagship IDE, OpenKomodo 1.0.0 Alpha 1 and Komodo Edit, which was always free but not open source. OpenKomodo supports development using dynamic languages including Perl, Python, Ruby, PHP, Tcl, and others. Both tools are available for Linux, Mac OS, and Windows, released under the Mozilla Public License (MPL), GNU General Public License (GPL), and GNU Lesser Public License (LGPL).

ActiveState's goal for the Open Komodo Project is to work with Mozilla and the open-source community to develop a platform for an array of "Open Web" developer tools. "Komodo Snapdragon" is the name of the web-development tool, which will expand on the Komodo framework and integrate with the Firefox web browser. Future enhancements proposed include autocomplete, syntax coloring and checking, and seamless editing, debugging, and HTML inspection capabilities between Komodo Snapdragon and Firefox.
