Social networking site MySpace has posted a page allowing people to sign up for its developer program.

The program, which opens officially on Feb. 5, will allow developers to create widgets for MySpace, similar to the way apps can be created for Facebook. MySpace will be the biggest major social networking player to support Google's OpenSocial common API, possibly giving it a much-needed boost in popularity.

MySpace isn't tipping its hand just yet as to what the new API will deliver to developers, but expectations are running high. MySpace will need to launch the program with some very compelling features right out of the gate if it is to overcome Facebook's long head start as an application platform.
