Intel unveiled its latest version of the Classmate PC, and announced the new Atom processor will power future generations of the educational laptop.

At the Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai yesterday, Intel unveiled the next generation of its Classmate PC notebook design, which is powered by a Celeron M processor, and has 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and mesh network capabilities. Depending on configuration, these laptops can include a 9-inch LCD screen, 6-cell battery life, 512 MB memory, a 30 GB hard drive, and an integrated webcam. Intel claims increased ruggedness and shock resistance as well. The PC is specifically designed for classroom use centering around the Internet.

The new version of the Classmate offers manufacturers design options, allowing them to tailor the PC to various markets. It can run Windows XP or Linux, and will come with software available in eight languages.

Intel also announced that it plans to incorporate its new, low-power Atom processor in future versions of the Classmate.
