Earlier this week, Game development tool maker Unity announced that it would be supporting the Wii game console.

"Unity has streamlined the game development process with an engine that is tuned for quickly and efficiently creating and porting games to the Wii," said David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies, in a statement on Unity's web site.

Unity is a game engine and development system that allows developers to create 3D games from shared, common assets, and then deploy those games to desktop systems, game consoles, Unity's web plug-in, or the iPhone.

The Wii tools for Unity will provide developers with a "Live Preview" feature, essentially a "play" button that will allow programmers to see how their game is functioning in any development phase. Unity's ShaderLab will provide optimized shaders for the Wii, and scriptable controllers will allow for reading data from a range of Wii remotes.
