RapidMind has announced that its Multi-Core Development Platform now supports the AMD FireStream 9170 and ATI Radeon HD 3870 graphics processor units (GPU) from AMD. With RapidMind and the AMD FireStream 9170, developers can presumably increase the performance of their applications. For example, performance improvements on financial algorithms have increased 27x when RapidMind's platform is utilized. The AMD FireStream 9170 is the industry's first double-precision floating-point capable GPU, where it can be used for demanding compute intensive, data-parallel tasks, such as scientific computing, broadcast encoding, 3D visualization, and financial analytics.

"With the FireStream 9170, AMD has raised the bar for accelerators, and RapidMind is uniquely suited to companies looking to leverage this performance," says RapidMind's Ray DePaul. "To remain competitive, software organizations must continue to adopt the latest technology. With RapidMind, they can build applications to run on today's fastest processors, knowing their software will automatically leverage the hardware innovations of tomorrow."

Developers of high performance computing and enterprise software are currently using RapidMind to build manageable, single-threaded applications that leverage the full potential of multi-core processors from AMD and Intel and to seamlessly take advantage of the application acceleration available from GPUs and the Cell Broadband Engine.
