A group of consumer electronics makers today announced the formation of the TransferJet Consortium to develop specifications for Sony's short-distance TransferJet wireless technology, which was announced in January at CES in Las Vegas.

The consortium includes:

TransferJet is a low-power, short-distance, high-datarate transfer technology designed primarily to allow communication between devices that are physically touching. The technology has an effective transmission rate of 375 Mbits/s, and uses very low-intensity radio waves, which should minimize interference with other devices. The effective distance for transmission is 3 cm.

The consortium hopes to enable devices to instantaneously connect when touching: For example, touching a digital camera to a television would instantly display photos on the television screen.

A web site has been set up with more information: http://www.transferjet.org/en/index.html.
