IBM has announced its fourth annual Master the Mainframe competition.

The competition is comprised of three challenges which become increasingly more difficult as the contestant moves on to the next level. Students are asked to become familiar with and operate the mainframe user interface, perform systems programming and application developing tasks and complete real-life situations encountered by experienced systems programmers.

The competition will run from October 1, 2008 through December 29, 2008. Winners will be announced on or about February 2, 2009. Students can log on to Master the Mainframe to register for the competition and receive full instructions.

The contest is part of IBM's Academic Initiative for System z program, a global project by IBM to align with colleges, universities and businesses across the globe to develop mainframe and large enterprise skills for future employment and Fortune 500 companies across the globe. The Academic Initiative for System z program has now worked with more than 400 colleges and universities across the globe to help train and educate more than 50,000 students.

Last year, more than 1,750 students from 325 high schools and colleges from across the United States and Canada entered the competition
