RIP 8 Bit?

A good friend of mine - and a great software engineer - decided to work on a hardware project the other day and asked my advice. He apparently had been involved in hardware design early in his career, but has since gone completely over to software. His project - which had something to do with a brother-in-law's business venture - involved sensing a light, delaying, and actuating a signal.
