Sony Electronics announced second-generation DVD+R double layer burners for internal and external use. Both burners support 16X DVD+R recording.

The internal DRU-710A and external DRZ-71OUL drives burn a full write-once single layer disk in about six minutes, Sony said, adding: "With 2.4X DVD+R DL recording, users can burn up to four hours of high-quality MPEG-2 video or up to 8.5 GB of data, music and/or images on compatible DVD+R DL media. This is equivalent to about seven days of music without a commercial break."

The company noted that the internal DRU-710A drives has an ATAPI interface, while the external DRX-710UL offers connectivity with IEEE 1394 (Sony i-LINK) and high-speed USB 2.0 digital interfaces.

The drives come with Nero video authoring software and DVD/CD burning software for the creation of DVDs and CDs. The internal drive is shipping to retailers for an estimated price of less than $180; the external drive costs less than $280.
