Programming Language Release Update

'Tis the season for programming language updates, or so it would seem. Here are a few for starters:

• Ruby 1.9.0 has been released and it has lots of changes and added features, a list of which is available here. You can download 1.9 at:

  • ftp.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/1.9/ruby-1.9.0-0.tar.gz

• Perl 5.10 and Strawberry Perl are now available and they too have a bunch of changes. To find out more about Perl 5.10, check out Rafael Garcia-Suarez's perldelta document here. You can read about the Strawberry Perl release here. To download:

• Tcl 8.5 has also been released. The Tcl Developer Xchange and ActiveState have announced the simultaneous release of 8.5. To download:

  • www.activestate.com/Products/activetcl/.
• Python 3000 (a.k.a. "Py3k", and released as Python 3.0), a new version of the language that is incompatible with the 2.x releases, was also released this month. You can find out more about it here. To download:

• And while it isn't a major release, I'd be remiss in not mentioning the D Programming Language which is under steady development and issuing new releases with new or improved features and libraries every couple of weeks or so. To download:
