Internet Videos: Who Cares About TV?

Internet video is a happening thing. According to a recent report by Internet marketing research firm comScore, more than 75 percent of U.S. Internet users watched a video online--including both streaming video and progressive downloads--in November 2007, averaging about 3.25 hours of video per person during the month.

In total, 138 million Americans--approximately three in four U.S Internet users--viewed nearly 9.5 billion online videos in November. If you're thinking that that's a lot of YouTube, you're right. 74.5 million people viewed 2.9 billion videos on YouTube. (My buddy Phil is probably responsible for a lot of these views; he doesn't have a TV, but spends his evening watching YouTube videos.) Google overall, which includes YouTube, led the pack with 2.9 billion videos viewed and 76.2 million unique viewers. Fox Interactive Media had 419 million videos viewed and 46 million unique viewers, followed by Yahoo! Sites with 328 million videos viewed, and Viacom Digital with 304 million.

Online viewers watched an average of 3.25 hours (195 minutes) of online video during November--a 29-percent gain from the 2.52 hours (151 minutes) watched in January 2007. The average online video duration was 2.8 minutes, and the average online video viewer consumed 69 videos.

Of course, Dr. Dobb's has been involved with Internet video for a couple of years now, with videos ranging from tutorials and interviews to technology news. Just last week, in fact, we launched a new video player at www.ddj.com that lets you select which video you want to watch from scrolling thumbnails below the player. New videos will be appearing weekly, so pop up some popcorn and keep coming back.

Now if it's videos about Silverlight that you're looking for, we also point to lots of interesting videos from our Silverlight Resource Center microsite. These videos range from topics such as debugging Silverlight apps in Visual Studio 2008, to resizing Silverlight controls. And again, these videos are updated weekly.
