Dr. Dobb's Kevin Carlson interviewed Paul Grabscheid about object-relational databases, in general, and Cache 2007, in particular. Released earlier this month, Cache 2007 includes the Zen framework (not to be confused with Zen Arcade), which lets you quickly build web apps from a collection of UI components, and Jalapeno, which stands for "JAva LAnguage PErsistence with NO mapping" Got that? XML is famous for flexibility, but equally famous for verbosity. If you're tired of slogging through data structures, then Jim Kent has a quartet of C-based tools that are sure to come in handy: autoXml automates mapping between C and XML data structures. autoXml also lets you iterate through data structures from the XML file without having to load the entire file into memory first. AutoDtd will generate a DTD from an source XML file, as well as an "attributed tree" and a summary of the data in the source file. sqlToXml generates the XML version of a relational database, and xmlToSql does the reverse. In true Dr. Dobb's fashion, all of the source code is available for download.

If it involves SOA and beer, then it must be the Beer Living Lab. Jon Erickson has the scoop on this case study from EU-funded ITAIDE project, The Beer Living Labs is aimed at proving the benefits of SOA in cross border trade.

Also check out Analysis: Web 2.0 Technologies, Lori MacVittie’s report on the state of Web 2.0, including some results from Network Computing’s recent SOA reader poll. Surprisingly, the majority of the respondents to the poll stated that their companies’ web-services infrastructures lack comprehensive security. Lori provides a rundown of security options including SOA security gateways, XML firewalls and more.
