RunRev Revs Up LiveCode for Android


Runtime Revolution (RunRev) has ported its LiveCode for iOS software development environment to Android devices, with a pre-release version available this week. The product's build is intended to provide developers with a base for creating cross-platform mobile apps using the same code base, while taking advantage of the many OS-specific features on each device.

Also compliant with iOS, web and desktop operating systems, LiveCode is positioned as an iterative compile-free coding environment with the option to view changes in real time. RunRev confirms that the product will allow mobile programmers to take advantage of the native feature sets on both Android and iOS devices without the limitation of using only the basic functions on both platforms. Using a high-level language, with English-like syntax for writing code, the company says that this product can be used to create rich-media apps, powerful productivity apps for in-house use, and active prototypes for exploring and designing new innovations using fully functional apps.

"Currently, mobile platform developers have to redevelop their applications in order to deploy to both iOS and Android, as the two development paradigms, Objective-C and Java, are completely different environments," said Kevin Miller, RunRev CEO. "We're showing how easy it is to create full-featured cross device Mobile apps with our Sheepherder video on our YouTube channel. The challenge shows a developer creating an app in just 3 hours and 16 minutes, for both Android and iOS."

In addition to LiveCode for mobile devices, deployment packs include Windows desktops, Mac OS X desktops, Linux desktops, and popular web browsers on Windows, Mac, and Linux including Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome, and Firefox.
