QNX Navigates Towards HTML5 In-Car Apps


Pushing HTML5-based technologies harder than most, QNX Software Systems has demonstrated its CAR 2 application platform for embedded automation software. The new solution is intended to spur interest in developers looking to produce in-car "infotainment" systems at a time when automotive companies are said to be embracing HTML5 with new fervor.

QNX (and others in this sector) have addressed the HTML5 opportunity from a "content delivery and refresh" perspective; i.e., the concept that with HTML5 powered technologies on board, a car's infotainment system can be updated more dynamically. For example, QNX CAR 2 allows developers to "re-skin" entire user interfaces across multiple lines or car models.

CAR 2 allows programmers to blend HTML5 applications with those created with Qt, OpenGL ES, and other user interface technologies, all on the same display and at the same time. Audi for one has backed QNX's efforts and says that cars have become the new mobile platform. Audi uses QNX software technology in its MIB High infotainment system, which is shipping in cars now.

According to Thilo Koslowski, automotive practice leader at Gartner, "Successful connected vehicle strategies will be based on the principle of 'controlled openness', which leverages existing standards and flexible architectures to create differentiated customer experiences. HTML5 in particular allows automotive companies to embrace this principle and to create connected vehicle solutions that are upgradeable and can evolve with overall software and technology advancements."

In addition to the new HTML framework, the QNX CAR 2 application platform pre-integrates technologies including the QNX Neutrino real-time operating system, a multimedia framework, an acoustic processing library for hands-free systems, and hundreds of software services and utilities.
