Black Duck Software has announced the availability of the Black Duck Suite 6 management and governance platform, claiming developer productivity gains of up to 10 times over its previous offering. The suite is targeted at organizations with anything up to thousands of developers working on terabytes of code. The product's proposition is the opportunity to realize the benefits of free and open source (FOSS) software, while mitigating what Black Duck denotes as 'challenges and complexity' associated with using it at scale.
As a provider of tools for automating the management, governance, and secure use of FOSS in a multi-source development process, Black Duck 6 includes advancements such as: rapid, automated discovery and identification of FOSS and other code without creating the risk of false negatives; a 'learned matching' capability to capture and leverage the knowledge of internal experts; a developer-focused component request capability; and expansion of its industry-leading KnowledgeBase, making Suite 6 more capable, efficient, and user-friendly.
"We estimate ~75 percent of Global 2000 enterprises use open source at some point in the software development lifecycle today, yet a minority of these organizations have established, open source governance policies and management tools in place," said Mark Driver, VP of research, Gartner, Inc.
