Thu, 11 Nov 2010 07:23:59 -0500 Them Wascally Gravity Waves http://www.drdobbs.com/parallel/them-wascally-gravity-waves/228701635 I opined in my January posting Elusive Gravity Waves that the LIGO Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory experiment may be methodologically flawed. A recent (2010-10-06) paper "First search for gravitational waves from the youngest known neutron star" does little to disabuse one of such a notion. Observation of Higgs Boson is necessary to further validate the Standard Model of particle physics. The HB is a sort of a quantum overhead bin into which the Almighty has surreptitiously stuffed the mass abstracted from the rest of Her luggage. If the Standard Model is validated by even a brief appearance of the Higgs Boson, science is left with a complete but unsatisfactory theory of the subatomic universe. On the other hand, if the Higgs Boson joins phlogiston and the aether in the bestiary of blown theories, science takes a new leap into exploring the dark places of the quantum mechanical universe instead of looking in the bright places as it does now. This could have a positive impact on quantum computing, where scientists and engineers are perforce exploring the dark places. Quantum computing could use a few more willing hands applied to the work. Tue, 15 Jun 2010 07:52:54 -0400 On the Quantum Computing Bus: A Chat with Steven M. Leggett of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign shared the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physics "for pioneering contributions to the theory of superconductors and superfluids".
Superfluids can, in theory, be used in topological quantum computing .
Superconductors are materials which offer effectively zero resistance to current at nearly absolute zero temperatures. They have been in the news recently in the form of superconducting magnets for the Large Hadron Collider.
Superfluids exhibit fluid dynamics analogous to the electrical dynamics of superconductors: they will flow through the finest capillaries without friction. The connection between superfluids and superconductors is more than an analogy: the quantum theories of the two phenomena are intimately related.
Prof. Sir Anthony (he was knighted in 2004) spoke with me by phone from his office.
Tue, 15 Dec 2009 19:00:00 -0500 Google is all over QC like flies on sugar http://www.drdobbs.com/architecture-and-design/google-is-all-over-qc-like-flies-on-suga/228701084 Google's not only watching your car for you, Google is all over quantum computing.
Mon, 14 Dec 2009 19:00:00 -0500 Russian rocket provides geometric analogy to quantum measurement coincidence http://www.drdobbs.com/architecture-and-design/russian-rocket-provides-geometric-analog/228701086 A Wired reprint of a Norwegian photo of the spiral cloud left by a Russian rocket spinning out of control illustrates a geometric analogy to a paradox of quantum entanglement.
Sat, 12 Dec 2009 19:00:00 -0500 Drowning Man Grasps Planck http://www.drdobbs.com/architecture-and-design/drowning-man-grasps-planck/228701090
Drowning in the ocean of quantum field theory, your correspondent grasps Planck and emerges to sputter another question.
Tue, 01 Dec 2009 19:00:00 -0500 Onion Theory of the Universe http://www.drdobbs.com/architecture-and-design/onion-theory-of-the-universe/228700059 Wed, 25 Nov 2009 19:00:00 -0500 A rotating disc replicates the prediction of quantum mechanics http://www.drdobbs.com/architecture-and-design/a-rotating-disc-replicates-the-predictio/228700792 "[R]enunciation of the visualisation of atomic phenomena is imposed upon us by the impossibility of their subdivision ..." - Niels Bohr, Discussions with Einstein on Epistemological Problems in Atomic Physics
A thought experiment follows in which a visualizable model of a rotating disc replicates the prediction of quantum mechanics with respect to coincidence of observation of entangled particles.
Sun, 22 Nov 2009 19:00:00 -0500 No Starch publisher Bill Pollock on Ryan Harris indictment http://www.drdobbs.com/architecture-and-design/no-starch-publisher-bill-pollock-on-ryan/228700581 In lurid language Wired reports that Ryan "DerEngel" Harris, author of Hacking the Cable Modem , has been federally indicted for "aiding computer intrusion" for his business of selling unlocked cable modems.
Bill Pollock is the founder of No Starch Press, Harris's publisher, which issued a press release No Starch Press Publisher Speaks Out on Hacking and Free Speech.
