Object-based cloud storage specialist Scality has announced plans to open-source the SDK of its RING technology, which consists of a number of nodes built using off-the-shelf servers.
In a move that somewhat jars with the core tenets of open source, the company is offering contributor 'bounties' from a total fund of $100,000 to garner interest from the open source developer community.
The Scality Open Source Program (SCOP) was introduced this week along with an open-source code download library called Scality Droplet. Engineered to allow developers to build applications that interface with Scality RING, with Amazon’s S3 API and more generally with any object storage technology, the company says that Scality RING is ideal for applications handling enormous volumes of user-generated content such as email in the cloud or social applications, like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
The SCOP Bounty Program lets developers apply for $1,000 to $10,000 payments. To be eligible, the developer’s software application must be built using code freely available from the Scality Droplet library. The submission deadline is November 30, 2010.
