Microsoft has announced finalization of the InRelease business unit acquisition from InCycle — and with that comes the release of a free downloadable preview of InRelease for Visual Studio 2013 Preview. This news is intended to expand Microsoft's application lifecycle offering to include more DevOps functionality.

This release management solution for development teams streamlines the process of managing project workflows in Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS) use cases. The software automates the release process for application deployment, but is also focused on improving the reliability and repeatability of these automated deployments.
NOTE: Microsoft says that InRelease will be integrated into Visual Studio 2013 and Team Foundation Server 2013.
"The release management capabilities provided by InRelease offer a critical component of the DevOps workflow, enabling developers to deliver faster and more frequently into production," said Soma Somasegar, corporate vice president, Microsoft developer division.
"You can download the bits starting today, read more about them in the InRelease Preview User Guide, and discuss them in the forums. While this preview is available as a separate download, we intend for the InRelease components to be packaged together with Visual Studio Test Professional, Visual Studio Premium, and Visual Studio Ultimate when Visual Studio 2013 ships later this year, added Somasegar.
Microsoft technical fellow Brian Harry has added to Somasegar's comments by saying that this is basically the existing InRelease product with some minimal changes to meet some of our compliance requirements; i.e., this is the first time that Microsoft can actually offer the product and much more development is on the way.
Microsoft's Harry says that the InRelease team is focused on getting InRelease "integrated into the on premises product" — but that eventually, Microsoft will also support its cloud service.
