New Relic Harnesses Node.js With Advanced APM


New Relic has announced general availability of its service to provide advanced code-level monitoring for Node.js, the framework for interactive real-time applications.

The New Relic service for Node.js framework is available from the firm and through key partnerships with CloudBees, Engine Yard, and Joyent, all which are said to have "strong ties" with the Node.js developer community, says the company.

With this release, New Relic delivers an APM solution for Node.js where the user can view the overall health of their applications from an aggregate response time dashboard and also drill down into code-level data.

The Node.js framework enables web applications to be built using traditional, front-end JavaScript on the back end of the server. Retail e-commerce, consumer Internet, online gaming, social media, and mobile app developers have been among the first to adopt Node.js due to its ability to support large volumes of asynchronous events.

Node.js uses include chat applications that run across distributed devices, data streaming (i.e., real-time audio or video, real-time game playing with tens of thousands of concurrent users), and powering API services for both web and mobile applications.

According to New Relic, everything that makes Node.js a powerful coding framework through its event-driven, asynchronous, and non-blocking I/O features also presents challenges in performance monitoring. New Relic says it has risen to those challenges by creating a customized agent from the ground up with advanced capabilities such as end-to-end transaction traces, alerts and notifications, application maps, code-level diagnostics, database transactions, and error tracking to quickly identify problem areas.
