NVIDIA today announced the APX 2500 processor, a low-power processor that it claims can output 10 hours of high-definition video on a mobile device. NVIDIA has been working with Microsoft to optimize the performance of Windows Mobile on the processor, and hopes to break into the smartphone processor market to compete with companies like Samsung and Texas Instruments, who currently dominate that space.
The processor is built around an ARM 11 core, running at speeds up to 750 MHz, and features a specially designed low-power GeForce video processor supporting OpenGL ES 2.0 and D3D Mobile. The processor can output video at resolutions of 720p (1280 x 720) and SXGA (1280 x 1024), and supports HDMI 1.2, LCD and CRT interfaces. It can even power dual displays. The 3-D capabilities of the device should also enable some fairly slick-looking 3-D user interfaces.
In addition to smartphones, other obvious applications of the processor include mobile media players and high-definition camcorders.
