Software application development business analytics and workflow company Pentaho has gone international with the creation of a new set of language packs presented in Dutch, French, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish.
The firm says this intelligence has been gathered from its own developer community after Pentaho community leader Pedro Alves asked for input to the work of providing translations and localizations.
The community contributed "Language Pack Installers" are now available to community users and enterprise customers alike through the Pentaho Marketplace. The prepared bundles include translations for the Pentaho platform files and also all the plugins.
"Internationalization (i18n) is a very challenging project. It's insanely hard not only to guarantee that everything is translated but also that the translation itself has quality. What we've been doing so far is bundle a default set at release time, but that has implications as development is focused on a single language, and release schedules sometimes don't allow a proper translation period," said Alves.
The Pentaho developer man explains that his team worked collaboratively with a newly formed group of translators; they prepared a bundle to ease the process of translation and worked on an application to install those bundles on the server.
Alves says that these initial releases won't be perfect — but with fast iterations the team hopes to progress and move onward to Italian, German, Japanese, Polish, Russian, and Swedish translations.
