Oracle has outlined its future virtualization strategy and claims that it is now in a position to deliver more value than VMware. Oracle's executive VP and chief corporate architect John Fowler used an online event to describe an integrated virtualization solutions portfolio that will virtualize and manage the full hardware and software stack, from desktop-to-datacenter.
Making a bid to gain a reputation for "application-aware" holistic virtualization that addresses all the layers of an enterprise datacenter, Oracle says that its has gone beyond VMware’s hypervisor-only approach by providing virtualization technologies, the applications that run within, and integrated management — addressing the entire stack from applications to disk.
"By taking a holistic approach that addresses all layers of the enterprise datacenter, Oracle Virtualization can help companies transform into effective service providers that support business priorities, increase performance and reliability, and reduce costs, and inefficiencies," said Edward Screven, Oracle chief corporate architect.
Aiming to move beyond virtualization solutions focused solely on the infrastructure layer and server consolidation, Oracles new desktop virtualization offerings are as follows: Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure 3.2, Oracle Sun Ray Software 5, Oracle VM Virtual Box 3.2 and Sun Ray 3 Plus Client.
With the acquisition of Sun Microsystems now taking full effect after a year of fine tuning the company's assets to match with Oracle's own strategic roadmap, Screven also said that the company was now ready to offer server, desktop, and storage virtualization technologies.
