Jolt Productivity Award: Infragistics Ultimate 2013 Vol. 2

Infragistics Ultimate 2013 Vol. 2 provides a remarkably complete multiplatform toolkit for developers. The toolkit includes a huge high-quality icon library, a prototyping tool, and a full set of UI controls for the following targets:

Desktop: Windows Forms, WPF, and WinRT XAML.

Web: ASP.NET, ASP.NET MVC, Silverlight, SharePoint, HTML5, and jQuery.

Mobile: Android, iOS, Windows Phone, HTML5, and WinRT XAML.

The included Indigo Studio is a powerful UI prototyping and interaction design tool that sports most of the things you might need to wireframe interactive UIs to turn Desktop, Web, and Mobile application ideas into fully functional prototypes. The inclusion of Indigo Studio and the icon library in the toolkit make Infragistics Ultimate a good choice when you want to use a single toolkit to cover most of the UI needs for your different applications. In case you don't need UI prototyping, the icon library, or SharePoint controls, you can opt for the less-expensive Infragistics Professional toolkit.

One of the best features of Ignite UI HTML5 and jQuery controls is that they simplify binding data, and therefore, reduce unnecessary boilerplate code to link to data sources. The controls are updated to easily bind to modern clients such as ASP.NET WebAPI, oData, RESTful domain data sources, JSON, and XML. In addition, the support for the latest ASP.NET MVC 5 and the availability of specific Infragistics templates in Visual Studio make it easy to quickly setup an ASP.NET MVC application with the jQuery UI-based widgets. The Hierarchical Grid widget takes full advantage of the data-binding simplification and can really simplify Web and mobile applications requiring the use of grids that have to be filled from different data sources. The toolkit also provides excellent components to easily export data to Microsoft Office.

The NucliOS iOS controls provide a powerful grid, responsive and interactive charting controls, and a few handsome gauges among other widgets. The nice thing about NucliOS is it includes support for Xamarin, so you can use it in your C# projects that target iOS. The Android controls provide powerful, customizable animated charts, but the product needs more widgets for this platform in future versions. — Gaston Hillar
