Cygnus Solutions Announces Cygwin and Source-Navigator v4.5

Cygnus Solutions has released Cygwin, a Unix/Linux shell environment and portability layer enabling delivery of open-source projects to Windows. Cygwin combines the Cygwin Unix/Linux APIs and libraries with an installer, the Intel Pentium II-optimized GNUPro compiler, and a Unix/Linux shell environment complete with standard Unix/Linux commands.

In addition to Cygwin, Cygnus Solutions has announced Source-Navigator v4.5, a source-code comprehension tool. Source-Navigator v4.5 features multi-language parsers that allow developers to parse project source code written in C, C++, tcl, FORTRAN, COBOL, or assembly; build a database of symbol information; and query the project database through a series of graphical browsers.

The commercial version of Cygwin costs $99 and includes a tar file of "contributed" open-source projects ported to the Windows platform. Source-Navigator Enterprise Edition v4.5 costs $499 and includes the Source-Navigator SDK. The Source-Navigator Developer Edition v4.5 costs $199. ParaSoft Unveils Insure++ v5.1 for Red Hat Linux

ParaSoft has released Insure++ v5.1 for Red Hat Linux, the latest version of their automatic runtime error-detection tool. Insure++ v5.1 uses patented Source Code Instrumentation technology, Runtime Pointer Tracking, and Mutation testing technologies to find errors quickly and precisely while providing the necessary information to repair the error immediately. Insure++ v5.1 provides three levels of instrumentation to allow customization of the error-detection process. In addition, Insure++ v5.1 for Red Hat Linux can find errors in multithreaded applications.

Synergetic Data Systems Releases UnForm v4.0

Synergetic Data Systems has announced UnForm v4.0, a product that allows businesses using legacy Unix systems to create graphical output. UnForm v4.0 also allows users to integrate electronic documents into their processing and provides access to those documents by way of web browsers, email, or Adobe Acrobat Readers.

UnForm v4.0 is a server-based application used for laser forms and electronic document generation. With UnForm v4.0, Unix sites can enhance existing documents with images, logos, and other graphical elements. In addition, UnForm v4.0 includes intelligence that allows developers to build cost-effective processing logic into documents.

The Portland Group Offers PGI Workstation 3.1

The Portland Group has released PGI Workstation 3.1, an addition to their suite of parallel Fortran, C, and C++ compilers and tools. PGI Workstation 3.1 includes native support for F77/F90 OpenMP and C/C++ OpenMP, native HPF with HPF 2.0 extensions, automatic Pentium III SSE optimizations, support for glibc 2.1, and integrated cpp preprocessing.

PGI Workstation 3.1 pricing starts at $299 for F77-only or C/C++-only packages. Full F90/HPF packages cost $499. Academic discounts and volume discounts are available.

Imagix Releases Imagix 4D r3.0

Imagix Corporation has released Imagix 4D r3.0, a reverse-engineering tool to analyze dependencies in sequence-critical areas of code. Using visualization and knowledge-based technologies, Imagix 4D r3.0 enables developers to explore, analyze, browse, and document legacy C/C++ software.

New in release 3.0 is Control Flow Analysis, which displays a detailed analysis of the sequences and conditions of function calls and variable usages in the code. Another feature is automated generation of online, HTML-formatted intranet documentation.

DLB Launches Visual Advantage v1.0

DLB has announced Visual Advantage v1.0, a Developer Studio Add-in that delivers multiple clipboards, automatic statement formatting, and word completion. Multiple clipboards provide multiple storage areas for cut and copied code. Visual Advantage v1.0 allows the developer to save the contents of the clipboards instead of relocating and recopying code from previous work sessions. Among other features, automatic statement formatting insures balanced parentheses and curly braces. And automatic word completion encourages the use of long descriptive identifiers because the developer needs to write them only once. After adding the identifier to the list, Visual Advantage v1.0 completes the text string in as few as two characters.

Visual Advantage v1.0 will be offered for a limited time at an introductory price of $69.95.

Applied 3D Science Introduces ParaLogixOEM

Applied 3D Science, Inc. has announced ParaLogixOEM, a solid modeling API and toolkit based on the Parasolid modeling kernel from Unigraphics Solutions Inc. ParaLogixOEM is a C++ object-oriented API that uses Microsoft MPC interface controls. It provides modules for 2-D and 3-D sketching and modeling, math libraries, an interface to constraint managers, import and export of model data to standard CAD formats, and display list processing.

Objectivity Announces Objectivity/DB r5.2

Objectivity Inc. has announced Objectivity/DB 5.2, a new version of Objectivity's object database. Version 5.2 adds Active Schema for full control of schema modification from any C++ program. Also new in v5.2 are Scalable Collections to create, build, and query collections. The Hot Failover feature allows operation in a two-machine hot standby redundancy configuration. Objectivity/DB r5.2 supports all Java native types from C++, plus Java 2, VisualWorks 5i, and ENVY 5 for Smalltalk engines.

Mabry Unveils HTTP/X

Mabry Software has released HTTP/X, an ActiveX control that provides access to the HTTP client protocol. Designed to be as programmer-friendly as possible, HTTP/X provides features such as automatic connect and disconnect for single interactions with HTTP/X servers. HTTP/X also directly supports pipelined request mechanisms. Available as both an ActiveX control and a COM object, HTTP/X runs in systems that support either. Also, HTTP/X doesn't require MFC DLLs to run.

SEAGULL Announces WinJa 2.2

SEAGULL has released WinJa 2.2, a rapid-deployement application enhancement technology for the mainframe platform. Version 2.2 includes enhanced and expanded Web-to-host/host-to-Web access and integration capabilities and improved options for connection and deployment. For example, an HTTP server has been built into the WinJa server, improving web deployment. The built-in HTTP server also manages multiple connections via a single Port 80 HTTP tunneling protocol, allowing multiple WinJa-enhanced e-business applications to run on the same server.

This release includes Host Session Connectors for open access to host functionality from Java and Domino applications. In addition, it offers ODBC support and enhanced Collector technology.

WinJa 2.2 pricing starts at $16,000 and varies depending on number of developers and size of deployment.

Raize Software Solutions Releases Raize Components 2.5

Raize Software Solutions has released Raize Components 2.5, the latest release of the company's library of native VCL controls for Delphi and C++Builder. Nine new components have been added and existing controls have been enhanced. Version 2.5 includes new design-time editors and enhancements of existing editors. In addition, all data-entry components now have a TabOnEnter property.

Raize Components 2.5 also introduces several new features specifically for Delphi 5 developers; for example, several new property categories are registered with Delphi 5, making it easier to locate properties related to specific features in Raize components.

Raize Components 2.5 costs $249. Users who purchased version 2.1 since July 1, 1999 are eligible to receive a free upgrade to version 2.5. Current users of version 2.0, and users who purchased version 2.1 before July 1, 1999 can purchase version 2.5 for $29 for a limited time.

Crossware Offers 8051 Development Suite

Crossware has released a development suite for the 8051 microcontroller. The suite includes a full-featured ANSI C compiler, a relocatable cross-assembler, an advanced overlay linker, a source-level simulator that can be extended to simulate a complete target system, and a debug monitor, which supports debugging on the target system itself.

The C compiler features smart pointers that tell the compiler where variables are located. It supports memory banking with up to 256 banks of code and 256 banks of RAM. It also features customizable common code merging, allowing the programmer to adjust the size of the program to fit the available memory.

Softel vdm Unveils SftTabs/DLL 3.5

Softel vdm, Inc. has released SftTabs/DLL 3.5, a new version of its DLL-based Windows control that provides tab controls for dialogs and regular windows. The included tab design wizard allows the developer to create the desired tab and generate the required C or C++ run-time source code to initialize and use the tab control.

SftTabs/DLL 3.5 supports development of wizard-style dialogs and similar multi-page dialogs that can be switched in response to other Windows controls. SftTabs/DLL 3.5 also supports tabbing into and out of dialogs attached to tabs, proper accelerator key handling, and default button outlining.

INFOLOGISTIK Introduces miniGRADE

INFOLOGISTIK GmbH has introduced miniGRADE, a UML-based tool for creating graphical models of complex business and IT systems. MiniGRADE's data dictionary functions as a detailed table of contents of a model. The data dictionary facilitates navigation in very large models. In addition, it supports a "pick name" function that lets the user select names from a list of existing ones, to help ensure model consistency.

A special feature allows users to turn models into talking presentations. The user records a series of spoken texts, each of which is associated with a given part of the model. When the presentation is played back, the user's narration is heard as the appropriate part of the model is displayed on the screen.

SuSE Launches SuSE Linux 6.3

SuSE has launched SuSE Linux 6.3, which includes a revision of YaST2, SuSE's installation program and administration tool. YaST2 provides automatic hardware detection for PCI components. Available in one DVD or six CD-ROMs, SuSE Linux 6.3 provides the Linux operating system with over 1,500 application programs, such as apache, samba, sendmail, GIMP, and RealPlayer 5.0.

Equipped with XFree86 3.3.5, SuSE Linux 6.3 supports graphics cards such as Savage3D, Savage4, and Trio 3D/2X. Also included in version 6.3 are the XFCom servers, which improve support for Intel i810 and all ATI 128 chips.

Project Technology Releases BridgePoint

Project Technology Inc. has released BridgePoint, a visual-modeling tool suite to translate UML models into code. BridgePoint consists of an integrated set of three tools that support the construction, execution, and translation of object-oriented models. The Model Builder, a method-aware modeling tool, lets the developer enter and maintain syntactically executable models expressed using either UML or Shlaer-Mellor notation. The Model Verifier interactively executes developer models, providing feedback on the dynamic aspects of a model. The Generator is a general-purpose translation engine that supports the construction of model compilers that target any environment and language.

VSI Announces Breeze Commerce Studio

VSI has released Breeze Commerce Studio, a toolkit for building XML-based business applications. Breeze Commerce Studio provides a visual environment that uses an XML schema editor, schema importer, and Java code-generation tools to integrate multiple data sources. Breeze Commerce Studio enables developers to create, import, and modify XML schema (DTDs). Additionally, Breeze Commerce Studio can import schema from JDBC- and ODBC-connectable databases and generate Java code in the form of objects that can be integrated into applications.

FlashPoint and Wind River Debut FlashPoint Digita Application SDK

FlashPoint Technology and Wind River Systems jointly have announced the FlashPoint Digita Application SDK based on the FlashPoint Digita OS that uses Wind River's Tornado development technology. FlashPoint Digita Application SDK is a toolkit designed for creating software applications for Digita-enabled cameras. It allows deeper access to camera control systems for in-camera applications. FlashPoint Digita Application SDK allows third parties to write applications that reside and work in Kodak and Hewlett-Packard cameras as after-market, digital-camera software products.

FlashPoint Digita Application SDK comes in two versions. The Standard version is for digital-imaging enthusiasts and others who wish to create inside-the-camera applications primarily for shareware. The Professional version is for those engaged in full commercial development projects and comes with additional tools and resources from FlashPoint and Wind River. Both versions contain a selection of sample applications that access the APIs.

Sleepycat Software Announces Berkeley DB v3.0

Sleepycat Software Inc. has released Berkeley DB v3.0. An embedded database, Berkeley DB v3.0 scales from palmtop deployment to terabyte-sized systems, and is a fully capable embedded transaction engine. An Open Source product, the complete source code is available for download on the World Wide Web.

Berkeley DB v3.0 features large in-memory databases and caches, petabyte-sized databases, fast-locking primitives for multithreaded or multiprocess access, and support for nested transactions. Version 3.0 also provides a new queueing access method in addition to the B-tree, hash, and simple record support.
