Extended Systems has shipped its Advantage Database Server TDataSet Descendant client for Kylix (Delphi for Linux). Kylix support lets Delphi developers port existing Advantage TDataSet Descendant applications to the Linux operating system without rewriting any of their database access code. The new Advantage Kylix components will provide database access without the use of Borland's dbExpress, just as the Advantage Windows components currently provide database access without the use of the Borland Database Engine (BDE).

Query Studio Developer, from Austin Sierra Technologies, integrates into the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET IDE and provides a pathway to deliver data to applications without a single line of code-enabling the build and management of multistep queries visually. Query Studio has a QBE-type interface, can preserve existing code, and exposes SQL script to ensure any problem can be solved. Additionally, you can develop and deliver data in a variety of applications. Query Studio supports most ANSI-compliant SQL databases including Microsoft Access, Advantage, Apollo, Btrieve, DB2, Informix, InterBase, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, and Sybase.

Infravio has announced the availability of Infravio Web Services Management Systems (WSMS) 2.0, a platform for the development, management, and execution of web services. The Infravio WSMS leverages existing assets including Java technology application code, Enterprise JavaBeans, Document Type Definitions (DTDs), and XML Schemas; ensures scalability by providing a single point of control over all applications and services in a web services environment; and establishes provider interfaces to standards-based services for security, messaging, and core systems management functions.

Empirix has released FirstACT 2.0, a web services testing tool that lets you create, execute, and maintain performance tests for individual web services. Key features in FirstACT 2.0 include a new diagnostics capability that lets testers analyze the accuracy of the WSDL file to ensure that end users can acquire the right information from the web service; improved, easy to use automatic test-case generation that permits users to test web services without programming; and an enhanced user interface that lets users implement the test solution with little or no training.

Virtuoso 2.7, from OpenLink Software, is a cross-platform, multipurpose, multiprotocol server for SQL, XML, and web services. This release enables the rapid creation, integration, hosting, and deployment of Web Services that coexist with existing IS infrastructures. Virtuoso enables the publishing of Persistent Stored Modules--SQL Stored Procedures, Java Objects, and .NET Objects--as SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI compliant Web Services. It also enables the creation of XML documents from SQL databases on the fly, such that XML-based access to disparate data can be used as the data foundation for current and next-generation Web Services. Virtuoso 2.7 is available for Windows, Linux, UNIX, and Mac OS X. It includes support for all ODBC and JDBC accessible databases.

The Standard Performance Evaluation Corp. (SPEC) has released SPECweb99_SSL, a benchmark that adds Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Protocol support to SPECweb99, the worldwide standard for web server performance evaluation. SPECweb99_SSL is built on the same text harness and uses the same workload and file sets as SPECweb00. It tests secure web server performance using HTTP 1.0/1.1 over the SSL Protocol. It is an extension of SPECweb99.

Entrek Software has announced the availability of Entrek TOOLBOX Windows CE Edition 1.2. Included in the TOOLBOX are CodeSnitch, an application run-time error detection tool that pinpoints errors in your application such as memory and resource leaks, heap corruption, invalid parameters passed to APIs, and API failures; and Procman, which allows you to browse, monitor, and modify objects on your system. With TOOLBOX, you can browse the system hierarchy of processes, threads, windows, and modules; monitor items such as process virtual memory, heap, and CPU usage, or a thread's CPU usage; modify items such as a thread's priority or quantum, to help fine-tune an application; and debug and fix GUI problems such as a window's style bits, Z-order, and position. TOOLBOX supports Windows CE 2.11 and higher.

Enumerate Solutions has released Numerator!Publish, a software package for posting data on the web in an interactive format for analyzing data when making charts, formatting spreadsheets, and adjusting data. Features include the ability to automatically convert numerical data from Microsoft Excel, Access, SQL Server, and delimited text files into enumerate's RDL format; four Java applets that let you post data as an interactive chart, table, chart-table, or full-featured display with enhanced analytical capabilities; and an Applet Tag Wizard that allows data providers to choose colors, chart types, and other customized features for the applet displays.

FMS has released Total .NET XRef, which generates cross-reference Microsoft C# and Visual Basic .NET code using an integrated Microsoft Visual Studio .NET parser. Designed for Visual Studio .NET, it performs real-time impact analysis to identify which objects a code change actually affects. Total .NET XRef runs directly in the VS.NET IDE appearing as a tool window; instantly generates a list of every reference to any name defined in code; displays every line of code containing the reference along with its class name, member name, line, column, and type of reference; supports C# and Visual Basic .NET code; and reference lists can be sent to an HTML page for printing, saving, or e-mailing at any time.

The Python Software Foundation (PSF) has announced the release of Version 2.2.1 of the Python programming language and standard libraries. This release includes over 100 enhancements for users of Python 2.2. Some features include object orientation, modular name spaces, exception, and multithreading; high-level dynamic data typing and very late binding; and tight integration with C, C++, and Java modules. Python runs on Windows, Macintosh, Linux, UNIX, OS/2, WinCE, and many other operating systems.

Maple 8 features include: Maplets, a Java-based technology that allows users to customize Maple 8's graphical user interface; a special package for introductory calculus that includes a tutor that guides you through differentiation, integration, and limit problems, and also provides one-step commands that create visual aids designed for calculus lessons; new tools that include numerical solutions to partial differential equations with boundary conditions; and new worksheet user interface facilities. openMosix is an open-source Linux kernel extension for single-system image clustering and is scalable and adaptive. There is no need to program applications specifically for openMosix. Since all extensions are inside the kernel, every application automatically and transparently benefits from the distributed computing concept. The cluster behaves as does an SMP, but this solution scales to over a thousand nodes, which can themselves be SMPs.

Alphora has announced the availability of Dataphor, a next-generation development toolset. Built on the Microsoft .NET Framework, Dataphor delivers an Automated Application Development (AAD) foundation that allows you to focus on the creation of the core data model and underlying process logic. The toolset consists of the Dataphor Data Access Engine (DAE), a virtual RDBMS that employs relational technology to provide a foundation for AAD; and the Dataphor Frontend, a collection of technologies focused on automating user experiences.

Embedded Real-Time Toolkit (ERT Toolkit), from Empress Software, is a development environment for embedded and real-time applications. It is a C API that implements abstract data objects in the Empress RDBMS such as Array, Circular Buffer, Queue, Stack, Table, and Variable, as well as special attributes such as Record Number, Timestamp, Key, and Serial Number. ERT Toolkit implements a C-callable API of over 200 functions that work with the abstract data objects and the Empress database. McObject has released eXtremeDB 2.0, a small footprint, main-memory database. Enhancements in 2.0 include object versioning, which allows the database to keep a history of versions of an object; notifications, which notify another application process when something of interest in the database has changed; and new data types, such as autoid, which causes eXtreme DB to automatically create a system-generated primary key for a record when it is inserted in the database and 8-byte integers, which support the use of eXtreme DB on 64-bit operating systems.

The object-oriented design of ChemIQ allows applications to be developed in any COM-compliant environment such as VB, C++, or Delphi. ChemXtra supports an extensive range of structural querying including superstructure, substructure, exact match, and similarity searching with stereo-selectivity. It also provides a programming interface that lets users build straightforward SQL select statements to search for and retrieve complex chemical information.
