One Instruction Wonder Update (part 2)
I recently wrote more about the One Instruction Wonder. William Gilreath wrote me to remind me that I forgot to link his book Computer Architecture: A Minimalist Perspective which is about the same type of computer architecture that One-Der uses.
We also had a lively e-mail discussion about our similar opinions of the "standard" Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach. A great book (and the third edition weighs a ton) but unless you plan to design the next Pentium slayer, it is a little intense. I'd rather have students designing practical hardware with something simple like One-Der than digging into the details of instruction reordering on the CDC mainframes. Maybe that's because I have to hire them and I don't get much call for designing those kinds of CPUs.
