Java SE for Business

As a Java developer, you know that Java is free and easy to use. As a business owner, or someone who has financial responsibility to see that your Java-based business succeeds, you need more than a free download.
As a Java developer, you know that Java is free and easy to use. As a business owner, or someone who has financial responsibility to see that your Java-based business succeeds, you need more than a free download.
For instance, companies that rely on Java-based software to run their business or support their customers (or those that sell Java-based software and service) require a support plan to ensure that solutions are handy when problems arise. For this reason, Sun has introduced Java SE for Business (http://sun.com/software/javaseforbusiness), which is mainly a support offering from Sun around Java and its related software. It provides easy-to-install critical patches and updates to the Java platform for up to 15 years in some cases. For many companies, upgrading to the latest Java VM is not always an option, and they may be forced to support software that's based on older Java SE technology - Java for Business can help here.
"Java SE for Business was created based on the feedback Sun received from a large number of our customers and ISV's who requested we extend the amount of time that Sun provides updates for Java SE releases via a paid support offering. Customers and partners running Java applications on older release families now have a choice of either migrating to a newer release or subscribing to Java SE for Business to continue receiving critical reliability, availability and security updates, as well as new operating environment support for their existing applications," said Jeet Kaul, vice president, Client Software Group at Sun.
As a Java developer, this new program may not impact you. However, as a Java technologist, or someone who cares about what happens to their Java-based creations after they're released, knowing you have the backing of Sun for updates and support for many years will help you sleep better.
Happy coding!
