Microsoft has launched a competition for web developers to encourage them to explore the possibilities of web design and showcase how HTML5 is at the forefront of an innovative and modern web experience. The logically named Dev Unplugged competition is described as a contest that challenges web developers to test the limits of a modern browser without the use of plug-ins.

Microsoft says that HTML5 and related technologies are giving developers the tools they need to create interactive high-definition experiences similar to native applications -- and that Dev Unplugged will provide a platform for developers to showcase their talents and drive the standard of the Web forward. The contest opens for submissions this week and runs through to May 9, 2011.

According to Microsoft's official announcement of the contest, there will be two prize categories -- the first centered around gaming with a cash prize of $5000, and the second a music prize, where developers will have to create a new way to listen and consume music, also with a cash prize of $5000.

"There will also be a grand prize of $9000 for the overall winner as well as the opportunity for the winner's work to be showcased at the Future of Web Apps Las Vegas show. Developers that take part will also be granted exclusive access to Hellboy materials and access to new music to help them develop their ideas," says Microsoft.
