In a move designed to increase the profile of its portfolio of desktop virtualization solutions, Oracle has this week announced Sun Ray Software 5.1. Built to tackle maintenance, upgrade, and operational costs, the new product also aims to provide users with access to a virtual desktop from 'nearly any' location.
Oracle has detailed Sun Ray 5.1's new enhancements to media, Adobe Flash, audio, USB support, and multi-display capabilities. All of which it says enable users to enjoy a highly secure and rich virtual desktop experience through its own Sun Ray Clients, PCs and laptops.
Now with enhanced support for Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008 R2 operating systems, Oracle says that its new release takes advantage of its new Sun Ray 3 Series Clients in the battle to reduce server workloads and provide a secure virtual desktop solution.
According to the company's website, “Sun Ray Software is part of Oracle’s complete 'desktop-to-data-center' virtualization portfolio, allowing customers to virtualize and manage their full software and hardware stack, from applications to disk.”
By centralizing management, data and applications on a server-hosted environment with no local operating system, Oracle claims that Sun Ray Software virtually eliminates desktop maintenance and client security vulnerabilities. As well as support for Microsoft Windows, Oracle Linux, and Oracle Solaris desktops, there is also interoperability with other virtualization platforms and brokers.
"Oracle continues to enhance its desktop virtualization portfolio and deliver new and improved capabilities that provide customers a highly secure, low cost, and easy to use remote desktop experience,” said Wim Coekaerts, Oracle’s senior vice president, Linux and virtualization engineering. “The Sun Ray Software 5.1 release delivers on Oracle’s commitment to advancing our desktop virtualization products. We continue to actively invest significant resources in Sun Ray and Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure products and work with customers to make it easier for them to deploy and manage virtual infrastructures with the best remote multimedia options.”
