The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has published a new standard, TIA-1091, IMS Security Framework. TIA-1091 defines the features and mechanisms necessary to ensure secure access to third generation (3G) broadband technologies for delivering IP multimedia applications, including video, audio, graphics, conferencing, and data, to mobile devices.
3G wireless broadband services are deployed over the IP Multimedia Core Network Subsystem (IMS) and use Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as the signaling protocol for creating and terminating multimedia sessions with the subscriber's mobile device. To ensure security, TIA-1091 defines how the SIP signaling is protected between the subscriber and the IMS framework, how the subscriber is authenticated and how the subscriber authenticates the IMS.
TIA-1091 was formulated under the cognizance of the TIA TR-45, Mobile and Personal Communications Systems.
