Transmeta Blends Hard and Software on New Crusoe Chip

Dr. Dobb's Journal,
January 01, 2000

If it has a battery and a Web browser, it will run on Crusoe." Thus Transmeta founder and CEO Dave Ditzel summed up the goal set for Transmeta's newly announced Crusoe microprocessors. In a two-hour briefing Transmeta's team of hardware and software engineers ran down the specs for its first two products, the TM3120 and the TM5400, both VLIW microprocessors, running at 400 and 700 MHz, respectively. The new chips move a considerable amount of computing out of hardware and into software to allow new levels of dynamic computing.
