Application release management company Serena Software has released its version 5 Release Manager product.
The firm claims to have a "unique" technology proposition on the basis of providing a tool to cover the "entire release lifecycle" by bringing smart process management and automated application deployment together in a single product.
While this is arguably very unlikely to make Serena unique and unparalleled in the market, its DevOps processes do work to control release and then integrate and coordinate release teams while looking after automated application deployments.
According to the company's Greg Sikes, while automating the deployment of releases is a necessary element of improving application delivery, Serena's customers report that standardizing the release process, automating the hand-offs amongst the teams, and getting actionable insight into the release lifecycle are key to the substantial improvement in their ability to realize business value from their application development investments.
Serena Release Manager v5 is supposed to bring a 3x increase in the throughput of deployments, a 75% reduction in defects in production, and a chance to scale three-hour product deployments down to 35 minutes so that half of the deployment team members' time is freed up for more value-added work.
Actionable Release Dashboards feature into the entire release lifecycle, from initial request through development, test, and deployment across the path to production. There are also Automated Turnovers based on standardized Runbooks to eliminate error-prone manual handoffs and deployments.
