That Internet company called Google confirmed it is bringing its Project Tango initiative to the tablet arena.
Project Tango was initially developed in line with deployment on a five-inch prototype Android smartphone only. Part of the firm's Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP), Tango tracks 3D motion of users and the ambient environment in real time.
Project Tango provides "advanced vision and sensing" capabilities that allow developers to explore what might be intriguingly called "new user experiences" not possible on other mobile devices.
According to Google, the goal of Project Tango is to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion.
"Today, developers excited about Project Tango can start building using the Project Tango Tablet Development Kit. Created in close collaboration with NVIDIA, the development kit includes the new Tegra K1 mobile processor to create a platform designed for computer vision and 3D sensing. You can use the Project Tango Tablet Development Kit to make applications that track full 3-dimensional motion and capture surfaces in the environment," said the company.
Project lead on Project Tango Johnny Lee says that awareness of space and motion is fundamental to the way we interact with our environment and each other.
"We are physical beings that live in a 3D world. Yet, our mobile devices assume that physical world ends at the boundaries of the screen. The goal of Project Tango is to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion."
The Project Tango tablet development kit will be available in initially limited numbers later this year.
