Liferay Portal 6.1 Enterprise Edition (EE) has been made available for download as of today. Designed to help publish, organize, and access data, this open source portal product supports the creation of enterprise applications and online business processes.
Essentially this is a web developer's content and document management system with integration to external enterprise document repositories. Advanced customization functions for programmers are offered through the Liferay Developer Studio product and Liferay 6.1 EE also offers page templates and multiple site and page version editing.
According to the Liferay team this 6.1 version includes enterprise system administration capabilities such as detailed auditing and reporting of portal usage against the portal database or any other database schema, as well as performance enhancements with testing against 10M (million) users, 10M message boards entries, 1M wiki pages, 1M blogs, and 1M documents.
Documents can be accessed in one place through enterprise integration with Documentum, SharePoint, and other popular third-party CMIS (Content Management Interoperability System) repositories. Outside web developer and programmer circles, business users can use visual editors to create web forms and workflows interactively in the browser. Users can also create custom lists online that can be tied to form submissions to model business processes such as inventory management, vacation requests, or sales order submissions.
