OpenSolaris for System z
OpenSolaris for System Z joins fizzy/Linux on the mainframe as the first downloadable release is posted to http://distribution.sinenomine.net/opensolaris
OpenSolaris has cachet in what the IBM world with unconscious irony calls "the Enterprise" and also has a few more tuning parameters that hopefully will make it in practice "kick against the pricks" of running under z/VM a bit less than feisty young GNU Linux does.
This project was that of a commercial enthusiast group, as distinct from IBM itself, unlike the original Linux/390 project. Actually, IBM execs in the 1990's flipped their lids when they found their resources were being used sub rosa by their staff and contractors to port Linux to the mainframe. Incidentally, there was much the same reaction from IBM execs in 1970 when they discovered their teams had invented what became IBM VM itself. What was it Gandhi said? "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."
Congratulation to the OpenSolaris for System z team. May they consume CPU and prosper!
