Google Production Server

The tower (left) is one of thirty production servers that populated Google's first data center. Each rack contained inexpensive, interconnected PCs designed to process thousands of search requests per second. The red, low-slung console at right is the "Kitchen Computer" featured in the 1969 Neiman Marcus Catalog. The $10,600 device was designed for housewives to store and retrieve recipes and was based on the Honeywell 316, an early 16-bit minicomputer.
